The Consciousness
Transition
Model

The first structured, cross-tradition map of how consciousness moves through post-mortem states—built from 23 years of research across NDE data, esoteric traditions, depth psychology, and systems thinking. Not a cosmology. Not a belief system. A map.

What the model resolves
The Religious Error

Religious cosmologies describe the afterlife as a moral sorting mechanism. The CTM shows that movement through post-mortem states is governed by coherence and integration, not judgment. The structures traditions call moral are functional descriptions misread as ethical ones.

The Materialist Dismissal

Skeptical reductionism attacks symbolic content as if it were literal claims—refutes descriptions of tunnels and angels and concludes there is nothing to explain. The CTM operates at the structural level, where the consistency is.

The New Age Conflation

New Age frameworks treat symbolic environments as literal destinations. The CTM separates function, form, and interpretation—the three layers most afterlife literature collapses into one.

Novel contributions of the framework

The CTM introduces 14 insights that either have not been made by other authors—or which others have gestured at without doing the deep explanatory work.

01

Afterlife accounts converge on structure, not narrative. Consistency lies in functional layers and transitions; imagery is culturally generated interface symbolism.

02

Symbolic environments are decoding layers, not destinations. What people call “places” are interpretive overlays — not literal realms.

03

Mistaking interface imagery for ontology is the central error in all afterlife discourse—generating heaven/hell literalism, soul-trap paranoia, and New Age cosmologies alike.

04

The afterlife behaves like a layered system, not a moral sorting mechanism. Movement is governed by state, coherence, and integration—not judgment or reward.

05

NDEs reveal transition mechanics, not the final state. Most NDEs occur within intermediary layers wrongly assumed to be ultimate realities.

06

Consciousness does not "go" somewhere—it changes operational context. Death is a shift in mode, not a relocation in space.

07

Memory, identity, and narrative selfhood decouple progressively, not instantly. This explains why early post-mortem reports feel personal, emotional, and human.

08

The "soul trap" is a misinterpretation of persistence within intermediate layers. What feels like entrapment is unresolved coherence—not external imprisonment.

09

Fear-based interpretations arise when agency is misattributed. People externalise internal constraints as hostile architectures.

10

Religious and New Age cosmologies describe the same layers using incompatible myth-languages. Their conflict is symbolic, not structural.

11

Skeptical reductionism fails because it treats symbolic content as literal claims. It attacks the wrong level of the phenomenon.

12

The persistence of archetypal figures points to shared cognitive decoding, not shared beings. Similar forms emerge because minds decode transition states similarly.

13

The afterlife cannot be understood without separating function, form, and interpretation. Most literature collapses all three.

14

What survives death is not the ego—but neither is it "nothing." Continuity exists, but not in the way religion predicts.

How the model was built

Cross-tradition. Cross-discipline. Architecturally honest.

The CTM was not built by starting with a conclusion and finding supporting evidence. It was built by identifying structural patterns that appear consistently across thousands of independent accounts—and asking what explanatory framework accounts for them without requiring faith in any tradition's myth-language.

Where traditions disagree on imagery, the CTM asks: what do they agree on structurally? Where NDE data conflicts with religious cosmology, the CTM asks: what layer of the phenomenon is each describing?

  • NDE research literature: van Lommel, Parnia, Greyson, Ring—structural pattern analysis across 3,000+ documented cases
  • Regression data: hypnotic and spontaneous past-life accounts mapped for structural consistency
  • Esoteric traditions: Vedanta, Neoplatonism, Anthroposophy, Gnosticism, Theosophy—cross-tradition structural extraction
  • Depth psychology: Jung's post-mortem model, archetypal decoding of transitional imagery
  • Systems thinking: consciousness modelled as a layered operating environment
  • Modern physics and philosophy of mind: consciousness-first ontologies as structural constraints
Framework terminology

The CTM introduces a precise vocabulary for talking about post-mortem states—without relying on the myth-language of any tradition.

Consciousness Transition Model

Brendan D. Murphy's structured, cross-tradition map of how consciousness moves through post-mortem states.

Interface Imagery

The culturally generated symbolic overlays through which traditions represent the same underlying structural transition layers.

Transition Mechanics

The functional processes revealed by NDE accounts—governing how consciousness moves between operational contexts at death.

Consciousness Operating Environment

The layered system within which consciousness operates—physical embodiment being one operational context among several.

Application-Layer Self

The personality and narrative identity layer that progressively decouples from deeper consciousness substrate at death.

Post-Mortem Architecture

The structural framework of what exists and operates beyond physical death—the total system the CTM maps—which other analysts miss.
